GHANAIANS ENCOURAGE HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Two hundred volunteers & staff members from Projects Abroad congregated in Accra to take part in a health walk from the Projects Abroad head office to Osu Children's home. The theme was to promote healthy bodies and minds with the concept “… a feeble body weakens the mind”.

The drums and trumpets were calling as people of Accra came to the streets to watch the spectacle as the volunteers promoted the people of Accra to stay healthy and have fun whilst integrating with the children of the government run Osu Children's home.

Tom Davis, Director of Projects Abroad in Ghana was very excited to show the company's social commitment to the community. Mr. Davis said the area of Accra was a deprived area that needed a considerable amount of support, and by promoting physical fitness by the health walk showed the surrounding community what opportunities Projects Abroad can provide.

Projects Abroad Ghana welcomed 2,400 volunteers from around the world that stayed an average of 2.6 months, last year alone. This made Ghana the most popular country to visit for internationals and it meant Projects Abroad were employing forty local staff members to support the volunteers in-country.

Mr. Davis proudly stated that Projects Abroad has already developed parts of Ghana to become self-sustaining in health, education and sanitation. Mr. Davis recognized that the government was unable to support these much needed projects on their own. At Osu Childrens Home, volunteers form projects abroad were providing the 176 children of the orphanage with trade and social skills to excel and become assets to the community.

Grant Appiah, Regional Coordinator for Cape Coast, explained the positive experience that volunteers created, making vulnerable children in many projects to feel they are part of society. It is a real risk that the orphans may feel isolated from the Ghanaian community, but Projects Abroad volunteers are provided with skills to immerse the children and make them feel like they belong to Ghanaian society.

The health walk attracted a lot of media attention including other newspaper outlets, television and radio which will help to publicise Ghana as a country with a lot of potential for growth and development.

Tom Davis has plans to increase volunteers visiting Ghana and incorporating more projects including sport, medicine and conservation. Ghana still needs to improve sanitation levels and Mr. Davis believes there is a lot of opportunity for new volunteer projects involved in provision of basic human rights and law.
