CENTRAL REGION ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP 2011

Annually Schools and Colleges Athletics Competitions are held to enable  the Region to select her athletes to compete in the bi annual athletics competition which is held at a given regional capital. The Central Region athletics championship  (21st annual) took place on Thursday, 24th to Friday 25th February 2011 at the Schools and Colleges Park Adisadel Cape Coast. It was organized by Ghana Education Service and the Central Region Schools & College Sports Association under the distinguished patronage of  the Central Region Minister hon. Mrs. Ama Benyiwa Doe. Chariman was the Regional Director of Education in Central Region Mr. Kofi Sarfo Kantanka.

The Central Region is divided into five  zones. At all  there were  in the boys as well as in the girls divison 74 schools in the zone-competition. Accredited schools, both private an public, had its competition prior to the regional one.  The first-four athletics who excelled in the various events were thus selected to represent their school in the main competition. In the girls division, eighteen events were held whilst the boys had nineteen. The final school results at the end of the two day competition in both girls and boys gave the same winners  as in 2010. JUKWA Senior High School was school best by the girls and by the boys it was MFANTSIPIM Senior High School .

The best girl athlete was CHRISTIANA KORE (JUKWA). She was first in 100m, 400m hurdles and anchored her school to win the second position in the medley and first in the 4 x 200 meters. More girls did a perfect job. Their results were extremely good. It's a very long time ago they broke so many records. In the years 2000 until 2009 they broke 3 records, last year (2010) they broke 3 records in one year and this year there were eight girls with a top achievement.

In the boys  division, the award for the overall best athlete was won by MICHAEL O. PREPRAH of MFANTSIPIM. He was first in 100m, 200m and helped his school to win the medley and the 4x 100 and 4x 200m. The other boys best athletes for the track events  as well as the field events were
Track: Isaac Quansah of JUKWA, he was first in 800m and 1500m. Field: Eric Amoasi of ASSIN MANSO, he was second in Discus and second in Shot Putt. There was no new region-record set in the boys competition.

The results in this article are recorded by Mr. E.A. Adjei, chief recorder of the 21st annual Regional Athletics Championship. We are grateful for his help.
