The international community has been urged to
discard the report that a resident of Komenda in Ghana who arrived from Liberia
in February this year died of Ebola virus.
According to the
Municipal Director of Ghana Health Service for Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem in
the Central Region of Ghana, Mr. Kofi Mends Quinor noted that the deceased collapsed
on Monday during the ramdan festivity and died on her way to the Kissi Health
centre due to the High blood pressure she suffered from.
He indicated that many of the citizens from Komenda
reside in Liberia hence there is the need to observe those that are returning
back to the area. He said surveillance team has been recruited both at Komenda and
Kissi Health centres.
Earlier on some
of the Health officials indicated that they have not been trained to handle or
detect if a patient is suffering from Ebola virus and appealed to the Ghana
Health Service to provide the necessary education and equipment to manage the
virus.
Meanwhile some of the leaders at Komenda have disclosed that many of their relatives who reside in Liberia arrive in the area through the sea or they travel back through ivory coast. Hence they have given directive to to those who arrive from Liberia to report at the Chief fisherman office for their information to be taken.
In a related
development the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has denied reports that
it has banned flights
from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.
Below is the
statement from Ghana Civil Aviation Authority.
RE- EBOLA:
GHANA BANS ALL FLIGHT FROM NIGERIA, OTHERS
The Ghana Civil
Aviation Authority’s attention has been drawn to an online publication on the
above subject on Saturday, 2nd August, 2014 and we wish to state emphatically
that the publication is erroneous and misleading.
The GCAA as the
sole Regulator of the Air Transport industry and Provider of Air Navigation
Service in the country has not ban any airline from Nigeria and other African Country
from operating to Ghana because of Suspicion that the flights might be carrying
passengers with the Ebola virus.
We can confirm
that flight operations to and from Nigeria and other African countries are
normal without any interruption.
The Ghana Civil
Aviation Authority wishes to assure passengers and the General Public that it
is working with all Stakeholders to ensure that the Kotoka International
Airport and all other airports in the country remain safe and secure.
