By: Bernard Kwaku Ayewubo
The environmental condition prevailing in a particular area may determine the kind of occupation people do in such area, the main occupation of the people of Elimina is fishing. Kobina Nkatia a fisherman over the years found it difficult to purchase fuel to fill their abord motor to go on sea for fishing activity and therefore needs government assistance to enable them make it to sea.
Moreover during my time with them said, they also encounter problems with the Chinese fishing operators who use other chemicals and light in trapping the fish and perform other unlawful activities at deep sea which affect activity of most Ghanaian fishermen when they to sea. Kobina also express concern about expensive abord motors which make it difficult for other canoes to go on deep sea fishing and plead to the government if he can come to their aid as soon as possible.
On the further note Kobina Nkatia said the small canoes earn about 1000 Ghana cedis a day while the big ones earn about 8000 Ghana cedis a day. In this interview said the creation of the habour may not cause any challenges to their activities and also reveal to me that; most of the canoes are from Moree, meaning most of the fishermen are migrants. Kobina also made mention of inadequate storage facilities which sometimes cause fish to be dump without storing them under sanitized conditions. In conclusion said he hope government would give earring to their dear problems.
